Bubba

Name: Bubba
Species: Green-cheeked conure
A.K.A.: Bee, Bubba Monster, Monster Bird, terrible evil horrible monster that devours all that is good and pure in the world

We adopted Bubba from a previous owner named Susan, who simply didn’t have the time for him. She made a the difficult choice to give him up in fall of 2008, and he joined our clan. Before Susan, he was a pet store bird. He was born in March of 2006, so he’s had quite a lot of shake-ups before landing with us, and then less than a year later we made the poor guy move down to Florida with us. Despite going through what is enough to be detrimental to some birds, Bubba has been an endless supply of energy and spirit since the day we adopted him.

Lauren and I like to say Bubba’s personality fits his species’ origin, which is South America. We like to call him our spicy pepper. He’s a tiny bird but that doesn’t stop him from thinking he owns every situation. He wants nothing more than a warm body part to cuddle next to and preen, or a pocket of any kind to burrow into and squeal. We think it’s a sonar spelunking thing. Or he’s just really that weird.

One of Bubba’s most entertaining behaviors, which has never failed to amused guests, is how easy he is to get excited. If you come home from being away for 30 minutes or 5 hours, he will make sure you feel welcome when you come back home. Clap your hands or shout “Wheee!” at him and he will puff his feathers up, scream at the top of his long, and take long, strides back and forth across his tree or cage. He’s even more excited if he hears running water – his water dance is just something you have to see.
